December 18, 2014 (by Jimmy) – A few days ago, Angela left to help our son Nathaniel move from Georgia to Tennessee. She took the dog with her because “technically” he is Nathaniel’s dog. I’m guessing when Nathaniel gets set-up in his own place we’ll have to give him our couch and get a new one.
Anyway, this left me here to fend for myself, a three-day bachelor. Woo Hoo, Party!!! Yeah right, I’m 53; party to me is sleeping without an alarm clock and binge watching “The Rockford Files.” So, what did I do for three days while Angela was away?
That’s a good question, and here’s the long version. I’m betting most of you don’t remember Cheech and Chong, the comedy duo. You may know Cheech Marin, the actor, and Tommy Chong, who just did Dancing with the Stars, but they started out as comedians back in the seventies. My brother and I would sometimes have a friend who had somehow gotten a C&C record and would bring it over. We could only play it when dad and mom were not home. Like what George Carlin did with language (seven things you can’t say on the air), Cheech and Chong did with marijuana and drug use. Even though we didn’t do drugs, it was funny stuff, but it was “from the wrong side of the tracks” in small town America where we lived. Anyway, one of the skits they did was called “What did you do on your summer vacation?” This is a synopsis of how it went. Teacher – Ok did everyone finish their assignment to write what you did on your summer vacation? Class – Yeah, man. Oh Yeah, you talkin’ teach. Teacher – Ok Tommy come read yours. Tommy – Oh, yeah man. On the first day of my summer vacation, I woke up, I got dressed, I went to the store, I hung out. On the second day of my summer vacation, I woke up, I got dressed, I went to the store, I hung out. On the third day of my summer vacation, I woke up, I got dressed, I went to the store, I hung out.
So what did I do while Angela was away? On my first day as a bachelor, I woke up, I drank coffee, watched TV, got dressed, did Christmas cards, watched TV, took a nap. On my second day as a bachelor, I woke up, I drank coffee, watched TV, got dressed… I think you get the drift. I didn’t do much. Angela didn’t expect much, and I met that expectation in spades. The day Angela was to come back, I made the bed.
Now as I reread this, it sure sounds like I was a lazy bum. Sometimes that’s not a bad thing. As we are getting ready to move the RV to Paducah and enjoy Christmas with family, it was nice to have a little down time to recharge the batteries. I am lucky enough to have a wife whot understands that when things need to be done, I’m there, but sometimes she understands I need to have some downtime. That doesn’t make me lazy; it makes me lucky to have a wife that understands what is needed and when.
I love you Angela… Plus there’s no way I can be as lazy as that dog…
